How to Throw the Perfect Left Hook

A hook is an important punch in any boxer's arsenal as it is not only difficult to defend against but is also a powerful blow. Mastering the left hook is even more troublesome to learn as for most boxers, their left hand is weaker than their right. From a right-handed stance, your left hand is in front and is therefore delivered quicker than your right hand, making it difficult for your opponent to anticipate the punch. The key to a powerful left hook is to rotate your entire body, not just your shoulders or your hips.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in your regular boxing stance, with your left leg and arm in the lead.

    • 2

Step into your opponent so that you can limit his maneuverability. This will also make it easier to throw a series of punches instead of a single blow.

    • 3

Bend your knees and shift the weight of your body, left arm and left leg to your left. Lean forward so that your head is lower than your opponent's elbow if you are throwing a left hook to the body. This will increase the power of your punch.

    • 4

Lift your left elbow so that it is parallel to the boxing mat as you swing your arm around from the left to the right.

    • 5

Rotate with your hips from left to right as you swing your left arm. Your hips generate all of your power, not your shoulders. Many amateur boxers try to rotate their shoulders to throw a powerful punch; however, rotating your hips will shift all of the weight from your torso through to your punching arm.

    • 6

Drop your right heel to the mat as your left heel rises when the punch is thrown.

    • 7

Clench your fist right before making contact with your target. Release your fist as soon as the punch is landed. This will help you to defend yourself for a potential counter. If you overextend your punch, you are vulnerable to your opponent's counter attacks since your arms are no longer in a defensive stance.

    • 8

Exhale as you throw the hook and return to your regular stance, unless you intend to throw a series of punches in quick succession.

    • 9

Ensure that your body, left fist, head and feet are facing the right.
