How to Measure Cross-Country Skis

Selecting the right length of ski for cross-country skiing used to be a simple matter of lifting your arm over head and finding a ski that was close to that height. However, as cross-country skiing has gotten more specialized and the ski designs have changed, more factors need to be taken into account, such as the terrain you will be skiing and your weight. Just as serious alpine skiers often have a quiver of skis for different terrain and conditions, modern nordic skiers often need more than one pair of skis.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on your primary goal on these skis: classic cross-country skiing in a groomed track, skate skiing on a groomed trail, or backcountry skiing.

    • 2

Measure your height in inches. Round to the nearest inch, and record the result.

    • 3

Multiply your height by 2.6. Skis lengths are given in centimeters, so this will convert your height to centimeters.

    • 4

Add 15 for skate skis or 25 for classic skis, and record the resulting number. This number is the length of skis, in centimeters, you should select to start. Heavier skiers may want to choose something longer; lighter skiers can look at something a little shorter.

Consult the sizing guide of the ski manufacturer when looking at backcountry nordic skis, which usually have partial metal edges and are sized more like telemark skis. The manufacturer will have specific size guidelines based on your weight. If you will often be skiing with a pack, add the weight you expect to carry to your body weight before checking the sizing guide.
