How to Get Better at Fencing

Fencing is a sport which has been practiced for centuries, originating as a competition for nobles to test their swordsmanship. Today it is still practiced around the world, and is an Olympic competition. While fencing is a complex sport, several basics can help you to learn proper technique faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend at all three leg joints when moving or thrusting. You should be bending your hips, knees and ankles to create movement.

    • 2

Practice shifting your weight from your front leg to you back leg, and vice versa, by using the three points of movement. To shift forward, your front ankle should bend up as your front knee bends, whereas your back ankle should bend down, driving you forward.

    • 3

Shift your weight by adjusting the position of your legs, not your upper body.

    • 4

Shift your weight toward your front leg when retreating, to allow you to get more thrust into the push of your front leg.

    • 5

Shift your weight to your back leg slightly before attempting to lunge. This will allow you to explode forward with the speed required to score a touch.
