How to Pass the Ball in Field Hockey

Seeing as how field hockey is a team sport, the easiest way to score is to pass the ball around to your teammates. Passing is very similar to hitting the ball - your goal is to control the ball and have it go right where you'd like.

Consider that passing is one of the best ways to beat a defender and have your team maintain possession of the ball. It moves the ball by or around your opponent. Passing moves the ball more quickly than dribbling alone.

    • 2

Be aware of both the location of the ball and where you're going to send it. Too much traffic between you and your teammate can mean an easy interception. If someone is right on you, you'll need to get the ball off more quickly.

    • 3

Hit the ball to your target (see "eHow to Hit the Ball in Field Hockey").

    • 4

Move to another open space so that you are available to be passed to.

Look into using different kinds of passes. The square pass is a lateral pass made directly across to your teammate. The through pass is made straight through a gap in the defense to your teammate. A diagonal pass is made to a teammate cutting through uncovered space between two defenders. A back pass is a 45-degree pass made to the rear on either side of you when your teammate is behind you.
