What Do the Three Stars on the Steelers Helmet Mean?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the more successful National Football League franchises, having appeared in the playoffs 26 times. The franchise was created in 1933, but the logo used today was not adopted until 1962. It has three stars which are based on an education initiative created by the American Iron and Steel Institute.
  1. Franchise History

    • The Steelers are a National Football League franchise that has been in existence since 1933. For the first eight years, the franchise existed as the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the 1941 and 1942 seasons, they were named the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1943, they were named the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Steagles. In 1944, the team was named Card-Pitt. Since 1945, they have been named the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have won six Super Bowls. These occurred in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, and 2008.

    American Iron and Steel Institute

    • The three stars on the Steelers' helmet draws inspiration from the American Iron and Steel Institute. The modern American Iron and Steel Institute has been in existence since 1908, when the American Iron and Steel Association, which had been formed in 1855, merged with the American Iron and Steel Institute. Since its founding, it has sought to educate the public on the importance of supporting and maintaining the steel industry in the United States.

    Steelmark Logo

    • The three stars on the helmet is a replica of the Steelmark logo that belongs to the American Iron and Steel Institute. This logo, like the one on the Steelers' helmet, has three different hypocloids, essentially diamonds. Since its beginning, the three stars have stood for the three benefits of steel. It says that steel lightens your work, widens your world and brightens your leisure. In 1962, Cleveland's Republic Steel suggested that the Steelers adopt the logo. After it adopted the logo that year, it had to petition the American Iron and Steel Institute to remove the word "steel" from the logo and replace it with "Steelers."

    Logo Since Adoption

    • Since its adoption, the Steelers logo has not once been changed. Also, the Steelers logo has always been on just the right side of the helmet. Originally, this was done to test the logo. Steelers' managers were not sure if the logo would match well with an entirely gold helmet. Having the logo on one side generated a great deal of support from fans. Because of the success of the one-sided logo, the managers decided to keep it. Today, the Steelers are the only team in the National Football League with a one-sided logo.
