Which Teams Have Won Five Super Bowls?

The Super Bowl is an annual game that determines the champion of the National Football League. The first Super Bowl took place on January 15, 1967, between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The first four Super Bowls were contested by the winners of the NFL and the American Football League before the two leagues merged in 1970. Since then, the winners of the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference have played for the title.

Pittsburgh's fifth championship came in 2006 after they beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10, and the Steelers won the Super Bowl again in 2009, with Santonio Holmes scoring the game-winning touchdown with only 35 seconds remaining, as Pittsburgh defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.

    • The Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowls, as of the 2010 season. The Cowboys won their first championship in 1972 as Roger Staubach guided them to a 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins. Dallas then defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII for the franchise's second title. Troy Aikman led the Cowboys past the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII, and Dallas followed up that success with another victory over the Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII. The Cowboys won their fifth title by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX.

    • The San Francisco 49ers have won five Super Bowl titles, as of the end of the 2010 season. The 49ers won their first Super Bowl in 1982 when they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21. San Francisco won its second championship three years later, beating the Miami Dolphins 38-16. Jerry Rice then set a Super Bowl record with 215 receiving yards in Super Bowl XXIII as the 49ers inflicted another defeat on the Bengals. Joe Montana won his third Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award in 1990 when he led San Francisco to its fourth title. His successor, Steve Young, threw for six touchdowns to guide the 49ers to their fifth NFL championship at Super Bowl XXIX.

    • As of the end of the 2010 season, no other NFL team has won five Super Bowls. The Green Bay Packers, the 2010 Super Bowl champions, have won four titles. The Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and New England Patriots have each won three Super Bowls.
