Liverpool’s need for Mendy is greatest

Mendy to Anfield? – dailystar.co.uk
Benjamin Mendy’s performances for Monaco this season have earned him rave reviews. The 22-year-old has been tough in the tackle, cute in the cross and direct in the dribble, making him one of the world’s most exciting young left-backs.
Chelsea already have an impressive first choice left wing-back in Marcos Alonso. The former Bolton man has advantages over Mendy in terms of discipline, height and goalscoring ability, even if he perhaps provides less width.
At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola favours inverted full-backs who are more likely to drift into midfield than push onto the byline. Fresher legs may be required in that department, but it remains to be seen whether Mendy suits the system.
A left-back is a major priority for Liverpool, who must find one quicker than James Milner, but defensively savvier than Alberto Moreno. Philippe Coutinho presses centrally and cuts inside as part of a narrow front three, so extra width from full-backs is a necessity.
Liverpool have arguably not had a good left-back since John Arne Riise, who left almost a decade ago. Bringing Mendy in could push the Reds closer to title contention next year.
