League Two Striker of the Season: Luton Town’s Danny Hylton

John Marquis and Matt Godden may disagree, but this blog would argue that Danny Hylton is the most complete striker in League Two.

The aforementioned duo have been excellent this term and deserve a mention, but Hylton edges it for consistency at this level for a longer period. He has proven himself in League Two for the last three years, with 54 goals since August 2014.

He was Oxford United’s top scorer in 14/15, then contributed significantly to their promotion the year after. The wage the U’s subsequently offered as a League One club was reportedly lower than what Luton Town proposed in the division below. His arrival at Kenilworth Road, therefore, represented one of the biggest statements of intent from a League Two club that summer.

Such heavy investment, which included the signing of defender and fellow Oxford first teamer Johnny Mullins, meant a minimum expectation of a top seven berth. Luton are on course to achieve that, even if inconsistent performances mean they will fall short of automatic promotion.

The star man has been Hylton, who has provided not only his highest ever goal tally of 24 with six games to go, but other qualities too. He works hard and holds the ball up, bringing midfielders such as Cameron McGeehan into play.

It is hard to escape the feeling that Hylton is due to play at a higher level, whatever happens in May.
