League Two Left-back of the Season: Enda Stevens

Since making his first league start in England against Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in November 2012, it is fair to say that Enda Stevens’ career has not gone entirely to plan.

Only injuries gave him a chance in Aston Villa’s first team and he did not do enough to merit a regular spot. Results in subsequent Football League loan spells was mixed with neither Notts County, Northampton nor Doncaster keeping him long-term, though the latter perhaps came closest, starting him 27 times in League One.

Perhaps it has taken a move to an elite League Two club for Stevens to rediscover some confidence. At Portsmouth, he has started all bar two of their 86 league games under Paul Cook including last season’s play-off clashes with Plymouth Argyle.

Defeat to the Pilgrims meant Stevens and Pompey missed out on promotion last term, but they are favourites to grab third spot this time around. The left-back’s energy, dynamism and creativity has once again been key.

One supporter (@Pompey_Memes) says: “He’s consistently solid. Both defensively and attacking and his link up play with the three midfields behind the striker is incredible in the corner areas. One of many unsung heroes!”

Should they be successful in May, both Portsmouth and the career of Enda Stevens will be back on an upward trajectory.
