Premier League Team of the Season: Gylfi Sigurdsson

If there is one thing Swansea City fans love in a player, it is the capacity to do something out of the ordinary. Going back to the days of the Vetch Field, Lee Trundle entertained supporters with his endless showboating and knack of scoring spectacular goals.
A decade and two promotions later, Gylfi Sigurdsson has received similar adoration. Like Trundle, his game does not revolve around pace – in fact eight Swansea players have made more dribbles per game (0.8 – WhoScored).
Instead, what he provides are pin-point deliveries, giving him 11 assists, more than anyone in the Premier League. No player has assisted another more often (four times) than Sigurdsson has assisted target man Fernando Llorente, who maximizes the midfielder’s service with aerial power.
Alfie Mawson has also benefited with three goals from Sigurdsson’s set pieces, which have also consisted of a large part of the Icelander’s eight individual goals. That record combined with assists, means he has been directly involved in 19 Premier League goals. That is more than Sadio Mane and Eden Hazard – who have been the stars of the campaign – and is not matched by any player outside the top seven.
Should Swansea stay up, one senses they will face a battle of a different kind in the next transfer market.
