Right-back is not exactly an area Portsmouth are short on this season, with many different players deployed there this term. However, manager Paul Cook plans to move Gareth Evans further up the pitch while Drew Talbot has struggled to replicate his performances at Chesterfield.

There comes a time when a manager must look away from the depth in a position and towards the quality of a player available. Paul Caddis is reportedly training with Portsmouth this week and should he sign a playing content, would significantly improve Portsmouth’s first eleven.

The Scot was well-liked by Birmingham City fans for his raw passion and lung-busting attacking runs. Their affection for him also came from his late equalizer at Bolton in May 2014 that preserved the club’s second tier status.

The nature of Portsmouth’s status at League Two level and the money they’ve spent on their squad, means they tend to face defensive opposition at Fratton Park. Attacking full-backs are a necessity for Pompey to create width and ultimately, break teams down.

Additionally, Caddis has already won promotion from this division with Swindon Town and was at times captain of Birmingham. He would provide vigour and leadership to a squad that, although talented, can at times be guilty of shirking duties out of possession. An improvement in that respect should mean promotion for Portsmouth and Caddis could play a big part.
