Football Conditioning Drills – Seek & Destroy
One of the football conditioning drills I feel helps our second level blocking, I call “seek and destroy”. It is conditioning, competitive and teaches players to put their heads on a swivel and locate unblocked defenders.
Seek & Destroy
Equipment needed: 9cones, 4 half rounds, and 7 shields
The drill set up:
Make a square with cones 30×30, 5yds from the left corner of sq,
Lay down half rounds end to end in the sq. Have 7 players hold shields they can line up anywhere in the sq holding the shields. 8 players line up parallel to the half rounds with the first player at the left end of bags. All the rest are to his left, the players in the sq spread out anywhere a coach wells set players outside the sq get into a stance.
At the same time players inside the square move around inside. The coach blows a whistle and outside all have to pull around half rounds and locate a player inside the sq who are jogging around until a player from the outside hits them with a good fit block. The player who does not block anyone goes to the front of the line and 7more players line up and start drill again.
It’s funny but most of the time the player who shows indecisiveness in the one lines up again and is not the last in line for more competition.
We do skill players vs. line. I feel this a big reason we block so well down field at the same time all players are moving and running so they game type conditioning
