Youth Football Offensive Line Drills – Quick Release Drill
At the middle school level of play, we see quarterbacks struggle getting the pass off either in time, or in proper throwing motion. So, we have developed some of our own youth football offensive line drills to address this. All too often we see some side arm motions and the result is the ball has a low flight path and is subject to bad things happening.
Quick Release Drill
This is a quick release drill. The center snaps the ball (center/QB exchange) & the QB gets the ball high with 2 hands by his jaw then throws high over the top with follow-through.
There is no time for the QB to rear back & throw; he has to throw from extending his arm straight up & throwing forward.
We’ve adapted the drill to have the QB throw over a 6 foot tall chain link fence to simulate the line. We put a receiver on the other side (running patterns).
Once they get the drill down we add blankets to the fence with gaps in between to simulate blind spots to help the QB find an open target.
The results are higher releases and much improved confidence in throwing down field when they can’t always see the open receiver.
