Football Offensive Lineman Drill – First Step is the Best Step
This football offensive lineman drill teaches young lineman to use the correct first step, the value of knowing the count, and the fact that it does not take much to make a good crease. I call this drill First step is the best step.
“First Step is the Best Step”
- Three players for this drill: running back, offensive lineman, and defensive lineman.
- RB about 5 yds directly behind OL, OL and DL head up on each other.
I usually put a line of cones 7 yds apart just to fence in the drill.
Coach stands behind DL (so the defense line can’t see him).
Coach flashes the count (using fingers) and then the direction the running back will take the ball (be careful of shadows…DL like to cheat).
On the correct count the OL gets a quick first step using the foot the direction the ball is going, then turns hip to seal the hole. It cannot be emphasized enough the need to use the correct first step and the value of knowing the count.
