How to Use a Three-Wood Fairway Metal
Imagine you're on the fairway, but the green is still a long way off. In this situation, many golfers shy away from using a 3-wood fairway metal. They are much more comfortable hitting a 3- or 4-iron instead, even though it might not get them to the green. Despite this tendency, 3-wood fairway irons are designed specifically to be hit from the grass. With a few adjustments to your swing, you can get the distance and accuracy hitting a metal 3-wood from the fairway or even the rough.

1
Position yourself with the ball far forward in your stance, just off your left heel. This will ensure that you hit the ball in your downswing.
-
2
Take one or two practice swings, allowing your arms to relax through the end of your swing. Notice the weight of the club in your arms as they relax.
-
3
Take your swing, allowing your arms to stretch out through the ball, just like you practiced. Meet the ball at the very bottom of the downswing, striking through the ball without lifting.
