How to Build Confidence in Golf

Golf is a two-part game--physical and mental. The mental side of the game can often present larger problems for players than the physical side. Building mental strength and confidence is just as important as building strength out on the course. If you can mentally prepare for a game, as well as physically prepare, the odds of having a better round are much higher. If you're new to the game, or are having difficulties, some confidence-building exercises may be in order.

Instructions

    • 1

Visualize the perfect round. Sit in a quiet place and mentally picture yourself on your favorite course or the course you're going to play. Go through each hole visualizing your shots and how you're going to play. Be positive, but realistic in your visualizations.

Find the one part of your game that needs the most improvement. Some golfers are poor at putting, others at chipping and still others slice constantly. Find the one thing that keeps you from succeeding at golf and start practicing that until you are confident in your abilities.

    • 3

Schedule a training lesson. Even the best professionals in the game need a tune up every now and again. Most golf courses will have a pro on staff who can assist you with just one lesson or even several. In some cases, problems in your game may just be a matter of technique, and having a fresh perspective can help you solve these problems.

Play more often. Building confidence is often a matter of repetition. If you can play more, you will be able to build skill and as such, build more confidence in your game. Try to practice at least once a week during the golf season to keep your skill level up.

    • 5

Master your favorite course. Every golf course is different and will have varying levels of challenges. Once you know a course backwards and forwards, your confidence level will naturally be higher and you will be able to go out and have a great round.

Try new challenges. As your skill increases, challenge yourself on new courses to help build your confidence level. Avoid picking a course that is too challenging, but don't be afraid to grow as a player and take your game to the next level.
