1
Determine your skate size. This is best accomplished by trying skates on. Typically your skates will be a size or two smaller than your shoes. When you first put the skate on it should be tight. Your toes will touch the end of the boot. If it feels like your favorite pair of old sneakers, it's too big and will give you trouble when you skate.

2
Determine the best brand for your foot type. Different manufacturers are known for different fits. For example, the instep height for Bauer's skates typically runs low to average. Mission's skates are narrower than Bauer's but will accommodate a higher instep. Graf's will accommodate numerous foot shapes. Trying on different skates will give you a good feel of what brand will fit you best.

Determine your level of boot stiffness. The three factors to consider when looking at boot stiffness are your weight, your skill level and the amount of time you will be playing. The boot should be stiff enough to hold up to your play level, but not so stiff that breaking them in and developing flexes in the upright are impossible.

Consider power-stretching. This service is offered by most skate dealers and involves using a special machine to stretch parts of the skate. It is relatively inexpensive and takes only about 12 hours. It allows you to create a truly custom fit. This is ideal if your feet are different sizes or you need to accommodate special needs.
