Skate Sharpening Instructions

Sharpening skates yourself is something that can save money and allow you to get them exactly the way you want them for your needs. It does require a reasonably high initial investment in equipment, but it is an investment that will pay off over the years in savings as you will no longer need to get your skates professionally sharpened.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the skate support so that it is very close to--but not touching--the grindstone.

    • 2

Adjust the hollow grinder to your specifications. The hollow is the size of the cutting edge; the distance between the left and right side. In general, heavier skaters benefit from a smaller hollow and lighter skaters will benefit from a larger hollow, as the larger the hollow the easier it is to glide.

    • 3

Clip the skate into the support and turn the sharpener on. Slowly move the skate backwards and forwards, making sure it touches the wheel. This is what will sharpen it.

    • 4

Turn the skate around and repeat step 3.
