Synthetic Ice Goalie Training

Synthetic ice surfaces are created using specially made plastic panels that allow hockey players to train on skates without requiring a real ice sheet. The surface is especially helpful for goalies looking to train in the offseason, when many arenas have removed their ice surfaces for the summer.
  1. Function

    • Synthetic ice training allows goaltenders to work on their skill sets during times when access to ice is limited. The surface provides a life-like feel beneath the player's skates, making it possible to work on exercises that normally can only be done on an actual ice sheet.

    Benefits

    • By being able to hone their crafts even when hockey season is over, goalies increase their chances of going into the next season improved and in better shape. This will allow them to surpass or at least keep pace with rival netminders, even those who shell out money to attend offseason goaltending camps.

    Time Frame

    • Most hockey seasons end between mid-April and early May, depending on the number of teams and the length of the playoffs. Leagues usually get started again in early or mid-September, giving goalies as long as five months to use a synthetic ice surface to their advantage in the offseason.
