How to Customize a Goalie Mask

Even though wearing a goalie mask can protect your face from both flying pucks and errant sticks, it can be the pits. Masks are hot, binding and can sometimes even impair your vision. One way to brighten up the experience is to customize the mask by adding design and color.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a fiberglass mask. Fiberglass masks accept paint and other color mediums fairly well, whereas most other mask materials do not.

    • 2

Remove your mask grill and any screws from the mask. Applying paint to metal or chrome objects could cause them to rust and corrode; therefore, taking them out of the mask is the safest bet. You may want to add a base color by painting the entire mask first and allowing it to dry before adding details in marker and other paint.

Apply designs to the mask using a marker or paint if you are confident in your drawing skills. Let your creativity run wild and draw whatever you desire. Flames are a popular look, as well as an extreme version of the team’s mascot.

    • 4

Place stickers on the mask. Stickers add design and flair to masks that markers and paints often cannot. Sticker options include sports teams, sayings and individual letters that spell out a name or phrase.

    • 5

Airbrush your mask. Airbrushing provides the most even and professional-looking design to goalie masks. However, this art can take some time to master and achieve the look you desire.

Spray a clear coat over your mask when it is completely dry. A clear coat will protect your design and add a bit of shine.
