How to Measure Hockey Shin Guards

Shin guards are protective gear worn by hockey players to protect them from injury. As the name suggests, shin guards are worn on the lower section of the leg to protect the shins from the hockey puck and other player's sticks and skates. Shin guards are available in sizes that are based on the length of the player's shin bone. Most shin guard sizes run from seven inches to 17 inches. Since the length of shin bones vary widely, each player must be measured to determine the correct size to wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down in a location that provides plenty of leg room.

    • 2

Put on hockey skates and lace them up as if you were preparing to skate.

    • 3

Bend the knee at a 90-degree angle so the blade of the skate is flat on the floor.

    • 4

Place the end of the tape measure at the center of the kneecap and stretch it all the way down to the top of the skate boot. The measurement in inches should match the length measurement of the shin guard. Thus, if the shin bone is 17 inches long, you would purchase a 17-inch shin guard.
