What Is the Difference Between an Intermediate & Senior Hockey Shaft?

One of the keys to improving your shot and stick handling skills in ice hockey is finding the correct hockey stick. Before you even consider the curve of the blade, you need to determine the correct flex and grip of the shaft. Intermediate shafts are made for younger players with smaller hands and less muscle weight. Older, more physically mature hockey players prefer senior shafts.
  1. Flex

    • A senior shaft is much stiffer than an intermediate shaft. In fact, the most flexible senior shaft is still stiffer than the stiffest intermediate shaft.

    Grip

    • Senior shafts have a wider, squarer grip, while intermediate shafts are slightly thinner and have rounded edges.

    Height and Weight

    • Senior shafts are both longer and heavier than intermediate shafts. However, the weight is not as significant and noticeable as the obvious difference in flex and grip.
