How to Become a Faster Skater
Instructions

-
1
Purchase skates that fit your feet. Put on the skates and tie the laces so your foot is firm but comfortable in the skate.
-
2
Load your knees when taking a stride on the ice. Bend your knees but keep your back straight and put the majority of pressure on your thighs and hamstrings. Loading your legs will help you achieve a 90-degree formation, which creates more power and speed when taking a stride.
-
3
Work the muscles in the legs when taking strides. Take long strides. Do not try to take every stride with full power. Speed comes with technique, not pushing against the ice.
-
4
Use the inner edges of each skate. Transfer power from your legs into the skates to create a powerful stride.
-
5
Observe other people who are good skaters. Take mental notes of their techniques and what makes them a fast skater. Watch NHL players' skating techniques to learn proper form. Visualize expert skaters' techniques and apply them to your own.
-
6
Workout your legs at the gym. Do hamstring curls, lunges and sumo squats to increase strength in your legs. Skate the fastest in sprint drills during practice.
