1
Make sure your goal is regulation size. A regulation size goal is 72 inches wide from the inside of the side posts and 48 inches high from the ice to the bottom of the crossbar. The goal is 44 inches deep at the bottom and only 18 inches deep at the top. If you want to make sure you are keeping score in ice hockey accurately.

2
Make sure the goal line is the correct width. All lines that make up the structure of an ice hockey surface are two inches thick. This may seem trivial, but the significance will become apparent soon.
-
3
Get the puck right. The puck should be one inch thick with a diameter of three inches. Any smaller and recording a score in ice hockey will be too easy. If it is too big, it will be too difficult. The size of the puck is an important aspect of keeping score in ice hockey.
-
4
Propel the puck completely over the goal line. The entire puck must pass completely over the goal line in order for a goal to be credited. It can be very difficult to determine if the puck has crossed the goal line in its entirety. This is usually where most of the controversy lies when keeping score in ice hockey.
-
5
Shoot the puck correctly. A goal will not be awarded if it is hit by a stick that is higher than the crossbar of the goal, or if it is kicked into the goal by a intentional movement of a player's foot.
-
6
Increase the score of the team that netted the goal by one. Finally, the easy part.
