How to Do a Forward Pass in Ice Hockey

A forward pass in ice hockey is a pass the moves in front of the passer to another player. The passer uses as sweeping motion to push the puck in front of him. It is the most basic pass in hockey. Here's how you can do a forward pass.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand next to the puck. If you are right handed, the puck should be on your right side as you learn to do a forward pass. If you are left handed, the puck should be on your left side.

    • 2

Put your body on a 45 degree angle so that your shoulder nearest the puck is angled toward it, but your other shoulder is facing ahead. The foot closest to the puck should be behind the other foot, but both toes should be facing forward.

    • 3

Hold your stick so that your dominant hand is about half way down the stick, and your other hand is near the top of the stick.

    • 4

Pull your stick behind you so that it is about knee height.

    • 5

Complete a forward pass by sweeping your stick forward. The blade should glide across the ice until it hits the puck and sends it forward.

    • 6

Allow your back foot to move forward with the momentum of your swing, and allow your stick to come forward as you follow through with your swing.
