How to Pass a Hockey Puck

Passing is an extremely important aspect of hockey since it opens out the ice, giving your teammates a better angle for scoring the puck. In the offensive zone, if you can pass the puck four to five times among teammates, the chance of scoring increases. Plus, getting your teammates involved in the play spreads out the defense, utilizing every aspect of the ice. Every pass should have a purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your hands on the hockey stick with your dominant hand on the bottom and the other hand near the top. This can help provide power when you snap the puck to your teammate.

    • 2

Bring the puck behind your back leg. Align the puck against your stick so it's in the middle of the blade.

    • 3

Place your weight on your back leg, keeping your head up to find an open teammate and an open lane. You want to pass the puck especially if you're involved in an odd-person rush. If there's a 2-on-1 or 3-on-2, passing the puck gives an extra option instead of shooting. This can keep the goalie guessing as to where the puck should land.

    • 4

Pull your top hand and push with your bottom hand to push the puck forward. You've just attempted the "sweep pass." It's called this because you're propelling the puck with a sweeping motion.

    • 5

Transfer your body weight from your back leg to the front once you connect with the puck and begin the sweeping motion. Follow through with your shot, pointing your stick in the direction you want the puck to go.
