How to Become a Pro Hockey Player

Many hockey players dream of making it to a professional league. Although few players do, it's not impossible. With plenty of practice, dedication and extraordinary talent you can become a professional hockey player. Ideally, hockey players should start out young to get the most benefit but anyone can learn how to play. Follow these steps to learn how become a pro hockey player.

      Enroll for hockey lessons at your local ice arena. You will be taught the basics of ice skating, puck handling and the rules of hockey.

      Participate in a hockey camp. There are day and boarding camp programs, private lessons and special hockey programs for goalies where you can learn the game and become a better hockey player. Ryan Schmidt's Breakaway Hockey Camp is recommended to prepare for trying out for the A, AA and AAA hockey teams (see Resources).

      Join a hockey league. You will start out it in a beginner's league and you can work your way up as you develop extraordinary talent. Try playing every position to see where your skills are most evident.

      Play in as many pickup games as you can. You will scrimmage with hockey players at every level. The way to improve your game is to play with those who are better than you.

      Try out for a minor league team. Depending upon where you live, there are minor leagues such as the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) and the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). These teams are very competitive and are frequently scouted for the National Hockey League (NHL).

      Show competitiveness and good sportsmanship. If you are professional hockey material you may be drafted. This process takes time and players are rarely drafted their first year playing minor league hockey, so keep playing.
