1
Find out the mandatory qualifications for joining the coach's program. If you want to join a school team, requirements may exist, such as past experience in the sport, academic achievement or passing a physical exam. You need to meet minimum standards for the coach to consider you as part of his team.
-
2
Contact the head coach of the program. Visit the coach in person to show your enthusiasm and interest. See if the coach has regular office hours, or find out how you can contact him by phone or email, and request a moment of his time.
-
3
Tell the coach that you want to play on the team. Be direct about your desire and qualifications. Coaches want players who take the game seriously, so this is not a time to beat around the bush.
-
4
Give the coach reason to consider you for the team. Tell him why you would make a great asset and what qualities you could bring to the program, such as experience, sportsmanship, leadership and communication skills.
-
5
Talk about your past athletic accomplishments or show the coach your athletic resume. If you have an impressive record, share it with him. He will want to know a little bit about your background before considering you for the team.
-
6
Tell the coach you would do what it takes to become part of the team. Explain to him why it is important to you to join the program.
-
7
Ask the coach how you can try out for the program. Make sure you do exactly as he says. If he wants you to show up the next day for a tryout, be there early. If he tells you that you need to put on a few more pounds and then contact him again, put on the weight and visit him soon.
-
8
Thank him for his time. If a coach has listened to you and will give you a shot, show him your appreciation.
