What Athletics Are Offered at Spelman College?

Spelman College was established in 1881 as a predominantly black college for women only in Atlanta, Georgia. The school offers just seven sports for athletes to participate in, but it is the educational goals of Spelman College that attracts their student body. More than 2,000 students are enrolled in Spelman College. The school is a member of the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC).
  1. Basketball

    • Comprised of 12 players and two coaches, the Lady Jaguars basketball program remains competitive in league play. The four-year program recruits players from all across the region, playing roughly 27 games a season before heading into post-season tournament action.

    Cross-Country

    • Nine runners comprise the cross country team at Spelman College. The group participates in seven regular season meets, then moves on to the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) tournament. From there, the runners who advance will move to the Division III Regionals before heading to the NCAA Nationals.

    Golf

    • Five players make up the golf team at Spelman College. Playing in several tournaments a year, the Lady Jaguars end their season with an appearance in the Women's Collegiate Golf Classic. Players are awarded four-year scholarships to the school.

    Softball

    • Thirteen players and four coaches will play a 28-game season before the year-end conference tournament. If the team wins the tournament, they move on to the Regional sectionals before the final NCAA Division III tournament.

    Soccer

    • Nineteen players and four coaches comprise the Lady Jaguar Soccer team. Playing a 15-game schedule, the club also competes in several tournaments before the season-ending Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) tournament.

    Tennis

    • Eleven ladies make up the tennis team and they participate in 13 matches, with two tournaments. The girls play in singles and doubles competitions. The Lady Jaguars will compete in the season-ending Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) tournament to determine who moves on to the regional then the national tournament.

    Volleyball

    • The Lady Jaguar team has 8 players and one coach. The team plays a 28-game season, and the team must be the first to win three sets per match to count as a victory.
