In What Ways Is Geometry Related to Sports?

Field Markings
-
Many sports have a field shape and markings that are specific to the sport. In most cases, the shape of a sports field is rectangular. However, some of the sports have other shapes, such as a diamond for baseball and circle for wrestling. Many of the sports also have field markings that are in specific geometric shapes. Each shape serves its own purpose. For instance, the arc on a basketball court shows players which shots are worth two points and which ones are worth three. The circles in the center of many fields show players where to line up to start the game.
Angles
-
Angles play a big role in many sports. A soccer player must know what angle to kick the ball to score a goal or make a safe pass to a team member. Hockey players must also decide which angle to shoot the puck for the best result. In basketball, players often use angles to pass the ball to another player or to bank the ball into the basket. When a player goes on defense in a sport, he must calculate the angle to determine where to best guard the other player to avoid him making a clear shot.
Arcs
-
Some sports utilize arcs, as well as angles, to score. For instance, in basketball, the ball must form an arc to fall into the basket. If a player throws the ball directly at the basket, the ball is not likely to go into the hoop. However, if she arcs the ball through the air, it stands a better chance of making it through the hoop. If the arc is incorrect, though, the ball may fall short of the basket or travel over the backboard. The arc of the ball is also important in sports, such as baseball, where an appropriately arced ball can turn into a home run.
Lines
-
Players who must defend a goal use the idea of lines and intersecting lines to help block shots. In these situations, the goal that must be protected is considered one line. The person with the ball becomes the other line. That line is on an intersection path with the line of the goal. It is up to the defender to place himself in the correct position to accurately block the line intersection. Since the players are constantly in motion, the position must be recalculated to prevent the player from scoring.
Plays
-
Coaches often come up with specific plays the coaches want players to use to score and to effectively prevent the other team from scoring. These coaches often use drawings to help players understand what is needed to execute the play. The drawings typically use shapes to represent players from each team to show positions. The coach then draws lines to show each player how to move and where the ball should travel for each play. Players must be able to understand these drawings to accurately perform the plays the coach requires.
