Sports Activities in Stockton, California for Kids

The city of Stockton is one of the fastest growing cities in California, with a population of 300,000 as of 2011. Stockton is 80 miles east of San Fransisco and 45 miles south of Sacramento; Stockton's cost of living is considerably less than either of those cities, making it a popular place for families. Sports activities are numerous in Stockton for kids of all ages, interests and abilities.

    • Stockton offers many individual sports, including skateboarding, gymnastics and martial arts. The City of Stockton Skate Park boasts many skating ramps and features including a moon, small bowl, offset steps a half pipe and rail. Gymnasts can choose from several gymnastics centers including Gymstars Gymnastics and Champion Gymnastics Academy. With as many as 16 martial arts academies for kids and adults, Stockton residents have plenty of options.

    Team Sports

    • The City of Stockton Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide variety of team sports all over town. The program provides fun, noncompetitive and inexpensive youth programs for all ages including outdoor and indoor soccer, volleyball, table tennis, flag football, basketball and baseball. Sports rotate seasonally and team locations and numbers depend upon numbers of participants.

    • The Oak Park Ice Arena is an Olympic-sized ice rink that offers a variety of ice-skating activities for all ages. Open skating is available for families most days of the week and programs are available including figure skating, hockey and private rental for parties. The Delta Speedway, located at the San Joaquin County Fairground, is a racetrack for micro sprint cars offering fun for drivers ages 5 and older. The Calaveras River Levee Bike Path (7 miles,) the Pacific Gas and Electric Greenbelt (1.75 miles) and the San Joaquin River Trail (3 miles) offer paved paths for biking, in-line skating, walking and jogging. In addition, there are 63 city parks in Stockton, ranging from two to 64 acres with swimming pools, sports fields and public restrooms.
