How to Implement Random Drug Testing for Students in Extra Curricular Activities

Random drug testing can help to deter teen drug use. Implementing random drug tests for students who are involved in any kind of extracurricular activity, or who drive to school, will make the students think twice if they are under any peer pressure to do drugs. According to USA Today, implementing a random drug test for students involved in after-school activities is not in violation of the students' constitutional rights because the Supreme Court says that the school's duty to provide a drug-free environment outweighs the students' expectation of privacy.

      Identify all the kids involved in extracurricular activities that would be eligible for a drug test. If you are testing students involved in extracurricular activities, then it is proper to make all activities eligible for testing. These activities can include athletics, clubs, committees or band.

      Randomly select a predetermined number of students from each activity. A good rule of thumb is to test 10 percent of the students involved with each activity, making sure that there is at least one person tested from each individual group. The selection process should be completely random to avoid implicating or eliminating anyone regarding drug usage. The process can be as simple as picking names out of a hat.

      Administer the tests. According to the Student Drug-Testing Institute, there are several different ways to test for drugs, which include testing samples of urine, hair, oral fluids and sweat.
