How to Dress to Play Rugby (What to Wear)

Besides a team uniform, rugby players don't have a lot of required pieces of equipment. Although the game involves tackling and hard hits, the players don't need the kind of padding seen on football players. Some rugby leagues have their own rules about equipment, but most players dress in the same basic way.

Instructions

    • 1

A mouth guard is the lone piece of required equipment for tackle rugby. The mouthpiece should be fixed by a dentist so it can hold up to multiple collisions.

    • 2

Cleats, or boots as rugby players call them, should for molded for good traction. Soccer cleats work just fine for rugby. The cleats cannot have a metal toe.

    • 3

Rugby-style tops in clothing stores share the same design as competitive rugby shirts. The shirts are typically cotton with a thin collar. The shorts are usually cotton. As with all team sports, the colors of any team have to be the same.

    • 4

Most rugby players wear knee-length cotton socks in team colors.

    • 5

Optional protective equipment such as padded scrum caps and shoulder pads are available, but few rugby players choose to wear them.
