How to Repair Pulled out Edges on Skis

Early-season ski conditions warrant skill and concentration if you want to preserve your gear. Obstacles hovering above, or lurking below, the snow's surface easily can ruin your day. Skiing over rocks causes base-damaging gouges that are easily fixed with a welder. Yet, clipping your edge on a sharp rock can stop you dead in your tracks. This leaves you with a dangling piece of metal on unusable skis. To avoid the costly replacement, fix your edge at home on your tuning bench.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the damaged edge section. Make two 45 degree cuts around the damage with your Dremel tool. Clamp the edge with the pliers, and gently tug it out.

    • 2

Cut out a small section of the base material with your utility knife to expose the core adjacent to the pulled edge. Pull the base material away from the core material, leaving a nice uniform hole.

    • 3

Shape the replacement edge piece by cutting it with wire cutters to replicate the gap in the ski. File the ends with a metal file to achieve the correct tolerance level.

    • 4

Drill small pilot holes into the core, following the pattern on your edge flange. Fill each hole with ski epoxy. Affix the replacement edge to the core by hand with the screws and screwdriver

    • 5

Epoxy the area around the flange of the replacement edge. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 6

Grind the heads off the edge screws with your grinder until they are flush with the flange.

    • 7

Level the epoxy with the small grinder head on your Dremel tool.

    • 8

Clean the area with rubbing alcohol.

    • 9

Fill in the gap on your base with your base welder. Make sure to fully cover the wound with melted base material. Allow it to dry.

    • 10

Trim off the excess base material with your hand planer. Sandpaper the entire surface of the repair to level it off.

    • 11

Clean the entire base with base cleaner in preparation for ski wax.
