How to Downhill Ski and Slow Down

Skiing can be a fun and exhilarating sport, but if not done correctly, it can become dangerous or even deadly. Using the correct techniques will keep you safe and let you enjoy your run down the mountain. It's not all about staying on your skis when coming down; it's just as important to know how to slow down and stop if you need to avoid something on your way down and when you reach the bottom of your ski trail.

Instructions

    • 1

With skis on, stand with your feet shoulder width apart.

    • 2

Keep your ankles, knees and waist bent slightly, but don't stick your backside out as this will throw off your balance.

    • 3

Keep your arms out wide to help keep your balance and feel your weight evenly on the balls and heels of your feet.

    • 4

Point your toes inward, making the space between your heels wider. This should create a "V" shape or what looks like a pizza slice.

    • 5

This shape, called "snow plough," will give you a solid, sturdy base while moving. To slow down even more, simply point your toes inward, which will widen the space between your heels behind you, eventually bringing you to a safe and complete stop.
