1
Remove your shoes and measure your height in centimeters. It may be easier to have a second person wield the tape measure for you. Or, tape a piece of paper to a wall at about the level of your head. Stand up straight against the wall. Place a pencil on top of your head, as level as possible. Make a mark on the paper with the pencil.

2
Measure the distance between the floor and the mark on the wall indicating head height.

3
Select a ski length according to your height measurement. If you are a beginner or intermediate skier, your ideal ski length is approximately 10 to 15 cm less than your height measurement. Advanced skiers may want a longer ski, at about 5 to 10 cm less than the height measurement.
-
4
Include your skiing style as a factor in your measurements. While height provides a general guideline for ski length, skiers who desire speed may wish to add about 5 cm to the ski length. More tentative skiers may wish to subtract an additional 5 cm.

Select a ski for a child based only on their height. Have the child stand up straight, then place the ski upright next to him. The ski should not be taller than the child's eyes. According to Ski Universe you should not purchase longer skis for children on the assumption that they'll outgrow the skis the following year. Skis that are a little too short are better than skis that are too long.
