How to Measure Children's Ski Length

Share your passion of skiing with the kids by getting them the right equipment and taking them to the slopes. When outfitting children with ski gear, find skis that fit well for their current size, not a size you think they should grow into. Choose ski gear that matches your terrain preferences. If you're mostly skiing on groomed slopes, opt for all-mountain skis, but if you prefer backcountry terrain, get your children fitted for backcountry skis.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a ski shop and try different pairs of skis. Allow the child to stand straight and position the ski upright next to her.

    • 2

Choose skis with tips that reach 6 to 8 inches below the top of the child's head for kids under 6 years old. For children ages 6 through 12, pick skis that reach the middle or upper part of their face. Shorter children need a ski length up to their chest or shoulders. For taller kids, opt for skis that reach between their collar bone and chin. Shorter skis are easier to manage and control. Proper-fitting skis help prevent leg fatigue and keep children from crossing skis.

Choose the ski depending on the child's experience level. For more experienced kids, select a slightly taller pair, while shorter skis are right for novice skiers. Shorter skis are easier to manage and maneuver for turns.

Consider the child's weight. A child who is lightweight for his height is well-suited for shorter skis while longer skis are appropriate for a child who is heavy for her height.
