Find the recommended length of your downhill skis based on your weight. According to Backcountry.com, those who weigh less than 120 pounds should use skis that are 155 centimeters in length. For those who weight 120-140 pounds, use skis 167 centimeters in length. For other measurements:

      141-160 pounds: 174 centimeters
      161-180 pounds: 180 centimeters
      181-200 pounds: 187 centimeters
200 pounds and over: 195 centimeters

Take into account your ability level when choosing a ski length. Consider getting a shorter ski if you are a novice. Shorter skis are lighter, more maneuverable and safer for skiing through obstacles on the slopes. Longer skis are more suited for skilled or aggressive skiers because they perform faster and provide more flotation.

Consider your height. According to REI experts, a general rule is that when you hold your skis with the ski tails on the ground, the tips should be somewhere between your nose and eyebrows.
