DIY Ski Wax

Waxing your skis correctly may make or break a ski holiday. Spreading wax over the bottom of your skis will speed you up on the slopes and make your experience better, so using wax is important. Since subzero temperatures and frozen snow can damage your skis, you need the wax to protect them. An easy do-it-yourself solution is spreading good old candle wax on your skis. Small cubes of it will fit in your pockets, so you can carry them with you to the slopes.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a box of white 5- to 6-inch long candles. Use 10 of them.

    • 2

Boil some water in a large cooking pot on a stove.

    • 3

Get a smaller pot that you won't use for cooking again, and put the candles into it. Place the small pot with the candles inside into the boiling water in the larger pot. You can also use aluminum jugs or a double boiler. You need to use two pots so the wax won't stick down or burn. Bring the water back to the boil and wait until the wax melts, while stirring continuously so the wax does not stick to the pan. It will take only a few minutes for the candles to melt.

    • 4

Scoop out the candle wicks from the molten wax with a fork.

    • 5

Grate a bar of ordinary soap into a bowl. Add it to the molten wax. Stir continuously until they both melt. This should only take a few minutes.

    • 6

Pour the molten mixture into an ice-cube tray.

    • 7

Let the mixture cool until it is completely solid throughout. Remove the cubes from the tray and wrap them in foil to store them.

    • 8

Use a cube to wax your skis by rubbing the wax along the base of the skis.
