How to Compare Ski Helmets

A ski helmet can be a lifesaving accessory in the case of a hard crash on the mountain. It is easy to find a comfortable, stylish ski helmet to protect your head.
  1. Measuring for Fit

    • Measure for size by finding the circumference of your head with a tape measure. Measure around the largest part of your head, just above the ears and eyebrows. Visit a ski or outdoors store to try on ski helmets in the size that corresponds to your measurement.

    Test the Fit

    • Adjust the chin strap so it sits against your throat. Move your head back and forth, and side to side to make sure the helmet doesn't slide around. The helmet should be snug but not so tight it pinches or gives you a headache. Try on helmets with your goggles to ensure compatibility.

    Helmet Weight

    • Backcountry and serious recreational skiers will probably prefer a lightweight helmet without face protection, while racers and other competitive skiers often wear heavier, more durable helmets with full-faced protection.

    Ventilation

    • Some ski helmets have no vents, and are very warm. Other helmets have vents to allow for more airflow. Some vents can be opened by removing interior plugs, while others can be opened with a dial or switch.
