How to Do a Brazilian Soccer Flick

In soccer, there are many ways to get around an opponent, from simply running around the opponent to technical flicks and tricks that can confuse and misdirect your opponent. The Brazilian flick, also known as the Rai kick after Brazilian midfielder Rai, who often used it successfully, is a flick that looks easy but is difficult to master. It is used to flick the ball over an opponent's head while you run around the opponent.

Advance towards your opponent. Ideally your opponent will also be advancing towards you, and not back pedaling, which makes it easier for the defender to counter the flick. This situation is most likely to occur in the midfield, which is why this flick is often used by midfielders.

Place one foot on the side of the ball, use the other to squeeze the ball between your feet, so that you have a good grip on the ball. This should be done when you are several feet from your opponent.

    • 3

Pull both legs up at the knee and release the ball, so that it launches over your shoulder and the head of your opponent.

    • 4

Go around your opponent to receive the ball as it lands. Don't wait to see if you were successful with the flick; that gives your opponent a chance to turn and take the ball.

    • 5

Pass the ball or put on a burst of speed, as your opponent will be directly behind you and looking to take the ball away.

    • 6

Practice the flick before using it in a game. You should be able to successfully execute the flick regularly in practice before trying it in a match.
