Instructions for the Goalkeeper in Soccer

Being the goalkeeper for a soccer team comes with responsibilites and pressure. The goalie is the only player who can touch the soccer ball with his hands without fear of penalty. A goalie also must defend the entire goal from the opponent. If that wasn't enough, a goalkeeper is also in charge of coordinating other defensive players in certain situations and beginning some offensive plays.

Instructions

    • 1

Defend the goal from the other team, which is the main responsibility of a goalkeeper in soccer. This requires speed, agility, the ability to read the ball and quick reflexes. The goalkeeper has some help from his teammates, particularly defenders, in regular game situations, but during penalty kicks, he's the lone defender.

    • 2

Coordinate with the other defenders to defend the goal. Goalies often have the best view of the entire field, so they need to communicate with their defenders regularly. Having good communication between the goalkeeper and defenders allows the goal to be protected by the team to ensure the ball doesn't cross the goal line.

    • 3

Throw the ball into play, which is the goalkeeper's only offensive responsibility. When a goalie has made a save, he can either throw or kick the ball to his teammates on the field. The goalkeeper will need to throw the ball to midfield in most situations, around 30 yards. Accuracy is key; the goalie needs to get the ball to his offensive players, not to a member of the opposing team.
