How to Choose Soccer Cleats

1
Determine the type of surface you are going to be playing on. This will determine the type of outsole you want to have. The outsole is the bottom of the shoe. If you are playing on a hard surface, choose an outsole that is molded or a multi-surface type of cleat. If you are playing on softer fields, a removable cleat, where the length can be changed, would be your best bet.

2
Pick the right type of leather for ball handling. There are a variety of leather types that, while not distinct to soccer shoes, will help give you the feel you desire. Kangaroo leather is soft and pliable but less durable than calfskin and also more expensive. Some calfskin leather uppers also go through a treatment process that gives the leather increased softness but retain the durability.

3
Size the shoe. While soccer shoes don't necessarily vary from normal, everyday walking shoes or running shoes, there may be a slight difference in size. Because you want your soccer cleats to have a snug fit, try the shoes on with the socks you'll be wearing during practice and games. Also consider the additional space your shin guards will take should they be the foot-wrapping type.

4
Determine how much you want to spend. Soccer cleats can run in the hundreds of dollars depending on the brand, type of leather and cleating outsole. Be realistic in how much wear you are going to put in to the shoes. If you plan on playing often and your feet are done growing, consider spending more money to get the exact shoe you want regardless of price.
