What Size Softball Bat Do I Need?

Whether you are playing little league or adult league, fast or slow pitch, it is important to choose the right size softball bat. You should consider both the length and the weight of the bat when selecting one for use in your softball games.
  1. Length

    • The length of the bat depends on the player's height and weight.

The length of your bat depends on your own height and weight. The smallest bat, typically is 26 inches and should be limited to players under 3 feet, 4 inches tall and weighing less than 60 pounds. A player who is taller than 6 feet, 1 inch and weighs more than 190 pounds should use a 34-inch bat. Bat length will vary for players in between.

    Weight

    • Once you have selected the bat with the proper length, it is important to find one with the proper weight. The drop of the bat will tell you the weight. Subtract the drop from the length to determine the weight. Swing bats of differing weights and see which one feels the best. Remember that the faster the swing, the farther the ball will travel, so always pick the lighter bat.

    Fast or Slow Pitch

    • If you are playing in a fast-pitch league, you should select a bat that is about an inch longer than normal. Also, think about taking a bat with a bigger drop, such as a -5, which will be lighter and allow you to swing the bat faster and deal with faster pitches.
