  1. Determine the length

With your tape measure, measure from your feet to your wrist. This should determine the proper length of the bat. You can also go by your age and weight, although these might not be the most accurate representations of what you will be comfortable with.

Test a friend's bat. This is important. If a certain type of bat has caught your eye, you should try it in a game. Swinging a bat in the store is different than when you're at the plate. Maybe go to a batting cage and try it. This is the best representation of the bat.

Go to a sporting goods store. Ask yourself these questions: Why am I buying this bat? Is it for a super-competitive league or is it more recreational? How much am I willing to spend? Do I want an aluminum bat with thin wall technology?

If buying a bat for a super-competitive league, you probably are willing to shell out more money. Take a few practice swings in the store. How does the grip feel? Is it too wide? Too much cushioning? Are you able to keep your hands "loose" around the barrel? These are important questions to answer before the purchase.

The makeup of the bat is also a factor. Most bats are made with super-thin wall technology, allowing for hitters to use more power and see their hits travels far. This also means that bats have become extremely expensive and quite an investment.
