How to Compare Fastpitch Softball Bats

1
Check the bat to make sure it has a stamp that says "ASA Certified." This means the bat has been certified by Amateur Softball Association of America and is legal to use in your league. Depending on the league you play in, some bats that are not ASA certified may not be usable.
-
2
Check the labeling of the bat and make sure it is for "Fast Pitch" and not "Slow Pitch." These bats are made differently, and most slow pitch bats are not allowed in fast pitch leagues.
-
3
Compare the length of the bats. You need a bat that is long enough to cover the entire plate when you swing. Place the bat on the ground and measure to see if it comes up to or slightly below your belt line. Anything higher is too long and anything several inches short won't do.
-
4
Check out the weight of the bat. Generally, the longer the bat, the heavier it is. However, you may choose to go with a heavier bat if you're strong enough to swing it successfully. This allows you to build up more momentum when swinging, which in turn sends the ball further when you make contact.
-
5
Hold the bat in your hands. The base of the bat sometimes begins to flair out at the butt. Depending on your preference you may or may not like this feeling. Other bats are straight at the end.
