How to Pick a Good-Hitting Softball Bat

Picking the right softball bat usually has little to do with the manufacturer and more to do with the hitting style of the player. A player's age, height, weight, and overall strength will determine which bat he or she should purchase. A bat that works for one player may be wrong for another. Selecting a softball bat is a very personal decision and should be related to the individual characteristics of the player.

Determine which type of bat you want. Wood softball bats are very rare. Most bats are made of aluminum or lined with graphite. Aluminum bats are extremely difficult to crack and offer very light weights for increased bat speed. Graphite lined bats have a large sweet spot, and they reduce bat vibration and shock in the hands. Personal preference will determine which bat you should buy.

Pick a bat based on your age. Proper bat length can sometimes be determined by your age. For example, a 10-year-old would require a 28- to 29-inch bat, while a person over 17 would require a 34-inch bat.

Pick a bat based on height and weight. Bigger and stronger players should use a heavier bat. Using a heavier bat will allow them to receive the benefits of power and heft that a heavier bat brings. On the other hand, smaller players would prefer a lighter bat to increase their bat speed.

Pick a bat that feels good. It is important to get a feel for a variety of bats before purchasing one. Visit your local sporting goods store and try out the bats. Try to use different bats during practice to decide what you really like.
