Refer to a bat length chart that is sorted by age what length is suitable for your age. If you are 17 years old or older, 34 inches is the suggested length. For younger players, the guide is as follows: 5- to 7-year-olds, 24-26 inches; 8- to 9-year-olds, 26-28 inches; 10-year-olds, 28-29 inches; 11- to 12-year-olds, 30-31 inches; 13- to 14-year-olds, 31-32 inches; and 15- to 16-year-olds, 32-33 inches.

Weigh yourself and take your height measurement on a height and weight scale. There is also a chart that determines the ideal bat length based on your height and weight. This chart is considered more accurate as it is more finely tuned to a person's specific body measurements.

Choose the material you want your bat to be made of. Bats are almost never made of wood anymore but are made of aluminum, graphite or titanium instead. Aluminum is the most commonly used material for bats because of its durability, resistance to cracks or breaks and increased area known as the sweet spot. Graphite and titanium are recent materials that are now used to make bats. They are both extremely lightweight and reduce the vibration in the bat that causes the shock and sting that runs through the bat and up the player's arm.

Find a suitable weight bat for your length by testing out different bats that match your ideal length and material to be used. Bat weights are measured in inches minus ounces proportion. For example a 32-inch bat that weighs 28 ounces would be labeled as a -4 in weight, because its weight, 28, is -4 of its length, which is 32. Try out several bats of your chosen material until you find one that feels comfortable to hold and swing.
