Soft Pitch Softball Rules & Etiquette
-
Pitching
-
The pitcher must have both feet on the pitching rubber and take only one step forward. The pitch must be delivered with an underhand motion and have an obvious arc of between 6 and 12 feet.
Fielders
-
Soft pitch softball leagues often allow 10 players in each starting lineup. The tenth fielder is typically employed as a fourth outfielder, but if the opposition doesn't have much power, the extra player can be used in the middle of the infield to fill the hole between the shortstop and second baseman.
Base Running
-
Base runners are not allowed to steal or lead off bases. They must remain on the base until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand.
Rules
-
A softball game consists of seven innings. The distance between bases is 60 feet, 30 feet shorter than in baseball.
Etiquette
-
Softball players should always keep their emotions under control and display proper sportsmanship. The pitcher should never deliver the ball until the batter is ready. Fielders should never use excessive force when tagging a runner. The umpire should always be shown respect. And a mercy rule may be instituted to prevent lopsided games.
