How to Choose a Girl's Softball Helmet

Choosing a softball helmet is important because the primary purpose of the helmet is to protect the batter from a hit to the head, either by a pitch or while running around the bases. It is vital when deciding on a batting helmet to make sure you choose one that will most benefit the player.

Try on several different helmets. Do not limit yourself to one sporting goods store. Shop at several sotries, trying on helmets at each until you've examined a range of types of helmets.

    • 2

Determine what size helmet you need by trying on several, making sure to note the small differences in each helmet. As you place each helmet on your head, make sure it fits snugly, but not too tightly. You want to be able to shake your head without the helmet shaking with it. Shake your head from side to side and up and down. Take five or six running steps to see how well the helmet will stay in place while you run around the bases.

Take four or five swings with a bat, pretending that you are looking at the pitcher. Imagine a pitch is coming straight across the plate and decide if you can easily see the ball. Make sure the brim of the helmet does not come down too low to impair your vision.

Take extra safety measures if you feel the need to make your helmet safer. A face mask similar to a football helmet face mask can be attached to the helmet to protect your face. Slap hitters often use a face mask because their hitting style makes them more vulnerable to being hit with a ball. They can be hit with a pitch but also have a ball ricochet off the bat when swinging. An extra plastic piece extending from the ear piece can be added to protect the jaw area. You may choose not to have the face mask and opt for the extended ear piece instead.

Choose a helmet with a ponytail slot if you pull your hair up during a game. This will help keep you comfortable and focused on hitting.
